Challenge
The client had been evaluating existing Shopify configurator plugins to handle product customisation on their store. The most capable solutions on the market, tools offering visual rendering, dynamic pricing, and multi-option configuration, were priced between $299 and $499 per month per store. For a growing e-commerce business, that recurring cost added up quickly, and none of the available plugins fit their exact product logic or customisation requirements without significant workarounds.
Beyond cost, off-the-shelf configurators come with hard limitations. They are built for generic use cases, not for a specific product catalogue with its own configuration rules, pricing logic, and visual requirements. The client needed a configurator that understood their products, not one they had to adapt their products to fit.
They also had a longer-term vision: a reusable configurator architecture that could be deployed across multiple Shopify stores as their business expanded, something no subscription plugin could offer.
Solution
We designed and built a custom AI-powered product configurator integrated directly into the client’s Shopify store, built specifically around their product catalogue, configuration logic, and customer experience requirements.
The configurator allows customers to select materials, finishes, colours, and components in real time, with each selection instantly reflected in a photorealistic AI-generated product visualisation. Rather than showing a static diagram or a basic colour overlay, the system generates a true-to-life rendering of the configured product, giving customers a clear, accurate picture of exactly what they are ordering.
Dynamic pricing updates automatically as customers make selections, calculating the final price in real time based on the chosen configuration without any manual input.
The backend was built with a reusable architecture, meaning the same configurator system can be deployed across multiple Shopify stores with minimal additional development, turning a single custom build into a scalable asset across the client’s future store portfolio.
An admin panel gives the client full control over product options, materials, pricing rules, and configurator settings, without requiring developer involvement for day-to-day updates.
